Source Reduction
Source reduction is at the top of our priorities for environmental stewardship. By starting at the source - before a product is used or developed - we can have positive environmental impacts on the entire chain of how and where a product is used. By reducing the amount of packaging required for our customers to safely ship products, we:
- Conserve resources by using less raw materials and energy to manufacture products.
- Reduce the number of truckloads needed to transport products, which results in less fuel burned and fewer emissions that contribute to global climate change.
- Reduce the amount of electricity needed to refrigerate products.
- Reduce the amount of waste generated and lessen costs of recycling, municipal composting and landfilling.
Through ongoing collaboration with our customers we are able to achieve maximum source reduction without sacrificing performance. This also includes consulting with customers to eliminate secondary packaging and developing specialty materials for non-packaging solutions that make our customers’ products lighter and safer.
Case in Point
- Air cellular products, such as Bubble Wrap® cushioning, provide better protection using less packaging material compared to loose fill or paper. Inflatable packaging systems, which inflate on-site, expand to nearly 200 times their original shipping size and require fewer truckloads to ship to customers.
- Through package redesign, Sealed Air integrates primary and secondary packaging on food products to reduce the total amount of packaging. This not only reduces the amount of source materials, but helps customers save energy costs by taking up less space in freezers and refrigerators.
