Over the past decade, globalization has played a dramatic role
in changing how companies approached innovation – including in
the packaging industry. Those companies that thrived over the
past decade embraced globalization as a central theme to the innovation
process. These were the companies that were able to expand into
new geographies with “borderless innovation”, adjust business
models to foster collaboration from all parts of the globe, and
keep
up with the increasing demands for speed to market. But today,
in addition to the social drivers presented by globalization,
a new trend has emerged that is impacting how packaging companies
approach innovation – that is the need to innovate more environmentally
responsible products. Global environmental issues are playing
increasing roles in how companies approach innovation – viewing
these issues as not only challenges, but as opportunities for
growth.
As part of our Corporate Citizenship commitment, we have identified
three key global drivers and priorities for our business strategy.
Setting strategic priorities in each of these areas for business,
social and environmental initiatives enables us to identity and
address essential themes core to our Company business.
Diminishing Natural Resources
Oil is a finite resource. And as prices and demand rise, we must
continue to search for alternative sources of raw materials for
our plastics packaging.
Climate Change
Measuring the carbon impact of our products throughout the entire
value chain is critical not only in the development of technologies,
but also in communicating with our customers and consumers to
help them make informed purchasing decisions.
Waste Management
Packaging prevents waste, but is also becomes a source of waste
at its end life. There is a need to strengthen the recovery efforts
for packaging, whether it be for use in recycled products or waste-to-energy
efforts, as well as alternatives, such as biodegradable products.
The key is to get better value while reducing the amount of materials
that go to landfills.
