Commitment to Sustainable Packaging

For sustainable practices, we focus on better management of natural resources and the impact our products have on the environment.

Our Commitment Our Approach

Invest twice the industry average in new product development

Begin at the point of design, where we can prevent waste, optimize our use of resources, select safer materials and plan for the recyclability or recoverability of our packaging

Utilize Life Cycle Management tools in the development of new products

Educate customers and the public so they can make informed environmental decisions

Innovating thinner and lighter products

Designing on-site expandable and inflatable products

Leveraging renewable materials & recycled content

Engineering materials and package features that minimize product waste

Reducing operational waste, energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions

Each of our Solutions Offers Measurable Benefits

Performance Society Environment

Meets the market demands for price.

Reduces the quantity of damaged or wasted products during transport, storage or use.

Helps our customers operate more efficiently and enhances their products

Optimizes the efficiency of the supply chain.

Provides measurable benefits to individuals & communities

Helping emerging markets grow culturally and economically

Is safe and meets all regulatory requirements

Material Efficiency – makes efficient use of raw materials and minimizes waste

Energy Efficiency – reduce the amount of energy needed to manufacture and ship our products as well as the amount of fuel our customers need to ship and store their products

Carbon Efficiency – reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the overall package and contents of the package

Our environmental goals, materials, energy and carbon efficiency, are based on three elements:

1. Within our own manufacturing operations (read more)
2. In the design and development of our products and services (read more)
3. In the amount of waste our products reduce once they leave the Sealed Air factory (read more)

For our products and services, traditionally in the early stages of product development, environmental performance has been is assessed in two categories – resource materials efficiency and energy efficiency –and performance targets are established for both and applied to the design. This methodology has been integral to our new product development process for years. Today, we are moving toward adding a third assessment area for new product development – carbon efficiency – and are working at utilizing and perfecting modeling tools that will accurately measure the complete environmental footprint of our packaging products and they products they protect.

For decades, our environmental performance efforts have focused primarily on reducing the amount of materials and weight of our products. Beyond saving raw materials, these efforts have produced measurable results in energy conversation through production line efficiencies and also reducing the amount of fuel our customers use to store and ship products. Over the past several years, we have broadened our efforts to include investing in the development of renewable materials and increasing the amount of recycled content used to manufacture products; and strengthening our recovery efforts.

We know there is no single solution to meeting the sustainable packaging needs of our customers. We also know our environmental objectives must be achieved without compromising performance or value the package brings to the consumer.
